Lisa Teryl is senior legal counsel, legal mediator and arbitrator with Teryl Scott Lawyers Inc. (1995-present). She has been a practicing lawyer for 25 years. Lisa is passionate about changing the legal landscape to empower laypeople with the law and to make the law more accessible and therefore fairer to Nova Scotians.

Legal Experience

Lisa has a deep knowledge of family law and how to manage tough conflicts. Using this experience, she developed the Divorcing Well™ mediation programs. Five-week high-conflict and two-week low conflict separations. She also has extensive experience in wills and estate planning, labour/employment, and human rights law.  This reduces the time and resources required to resolve workplace conflicts. 

Law Education

Lisa graduated from the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University. In 2015 she was an honoree at an Extraordinary Alumnae Lunch from the Schulich School of Law.

Legal Organizations

Lisa Teryl is a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society.

She served for six years as senior legal counsel at the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission (2009-2015).

Lisa serves as a volunteer for the Human Rights and Freedoms Centre, a non-profit that promotes and protects human rights in Canada.

Author and Lawyer

Lisa is also a legal educator and authored Nova Scotia Law:  Everything You Wanted To Know But Couldn’t Afford To Ask (Pottersfield, 2002). A local bestseller and an early effort to empower laypeople with the law.

LAWYER

Tandiwe Nyajeka grew up in Halifax and is fluent in French and English. She holds a Bachelor of Arts, Honours English Literature, minor in Theology (Concordia); a Graduate Diploma, Public Relations Management (McGill); and a Juris Doctor/Bachelor of Laws (Dalhousie Law School).

Tandiwe Nyajeka offers services in Independent Workplace Investigations, human rights, employment and family law. Although an experienced trial lawyer, Tandiwe’s present focus is mediations, fair and objective investigations, and legal coaching.

Daniel Wilband

LAWYER

Daniel Wilband has significant experience with labour and employment law and also human rights issues that arise in workplaces. He has worked closely with unions assisting with collective agreement matters, constitutional law and complex human rights issues. He also assists non-unionized employees with severance and employment termination issues. 

Daniel is a Maritimer and grew up near Saint John, New Brunswick. He is fluently bilingual, and his wife Michelle is Acadian from the same area.  Daniel attended McGill University’s Faculty of Law, arguably Canada’s finest law school, graduating on the Dean’s Honour List in 2015. He completed his articles at a well-known law firm in Toronto that specializes in labour, employment, constitutional and human rights law, after which he served as a clerk to the judiciary at the prestigious Court of Appeal for Ontario. Prior to law school, Daniel earned a master’s degree in classics and philosophy from Dalhousie University. He has also taught at the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has taught labour law at Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law. 

Daniel likes to cook, read, and spend time outdoors with his two young children. He plays guitar and clawhammer banjo and is the newest member of the Wheelers– the firm’s country and western fiddle band. The Wheelers band members are a collection of lawyers from Brookshire Law Office, Teryl Scott Lawyers Inc, and Richardson’s Law Office.

Asaf Rashid

LAWYER

Asaf Rashid is a Halifax-based criminal defence and prison lawyer. Asaf has a history as a community organizer, who has worked for years alongside low-income and working people for housing, and better working conditions. He has worked with migrants in their struggles to remain in Canada and to enjoy the rights and dignity of Canadians. He also assists clients with human rights claims. 

Asaf grew up in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where he graduated from the University of New Brunswick Law School. Asaf has articled in Calgary and practised in Toronto before coming to Nova Scotia. He has recently dabbled in sea-kayaking and is an avid runner. In 2016, he ran the “Legs for Literacy” marathon in New Brunswick.

Shannon McMullin

PARALEGAL

Shannon McMullin is the firm’s paralegal. Shannon is happy to assist us with administrative matters pertaining to legal separations, divorces and Wills and estates.

Shannon has a background in biology and dietetics from Mount Saint Vincent University and was the co-owner of Coda Ramen restaurant in Halifax before joining the Teryl Scott team. She also has two small children that keep her busy!

Shawn Scott

Shawn Scott  is the co-founder of Teryl Scott and has his own diverse law firm at Brookshire Law Office, located in the same building as Teryl Scott Lawyers Inc. For clients and customers who require a senior trial divorce lawyer, or an immigration law  we engage Shawn at Brookshire Law Office.  

Shawn has been a family trial lawyer since 1996. He graduated from Queen’s University, Ontario with a Doctor’s degree in Jurisprudence in 1994.  He is a free speech advocate and a member of the Canadian Bar Association.
