We Do It Differently

For more than 25 years we have been developing ways to improve the delivery of legal services for employees and employers. As a result, we are leaders in the field and offer these innovative solutions:

  • We provide “legal coaching” for those who would like to represent themselves.
  • And, our most popular innovation in 25 years: we provide "pay-as-you-go" employment law services to manage your legal budget. No retainer required!

Our Services In Employment Contracts

Teryl Scott’s team of employment lawyers in Halifax, and serving all of the province, are here for all your employment contract needs. Whether you are looking for a professional review of an employment contract you have written or you want a review of what you are being asked to sign, we are here to make sure you aren’t leaving anything on the table. This is especially important when it comes to the review of executive contracts.

Employee - Review of Employment Contract

Reviewing an employment contract you have been given typically takes one hour and is billed at $450 plus HST for the first hour. If further coaching is required, our legal coaching rate is $450 per hour plus a 4% admin fee and HST.

  • We will read the contract with you and explain it in lay person’s terms, all of the sections
  • We will help you understand what you are receiving in the offer, and in particular, whether the severance-termination provisions are adequate
  • We will explain the difference between non-compete and non-solicitation clauses and what they might mean in your situation
  • We will suggest negotiation points and help you draft under your signature a counter offer, if needed

Employer - Review of Employment Contract

Reviewing an employment contract you have written typically takes one hour and is billed at $450 plus HST for the first hour. If further coaching is required, our legal coaching rate is $450 per hour plus a 4% admin fee and HST.

  • We will make sure the contract you have written is clear
  • We will help you clarify any ambiguous clauses
  • We will make sure all clauses are legal and not contradictory to the Labour Standards Code
  • We will suggest clauses which we think are good practice but missing from your contract, such as reasonable terms of severance and noncompete clauses

Employer - Prepare Employment Contract

This service typically takes two hours and is billed at an hourly legal coaching rate of $450 per hour plus a 4% admin fee and HST after the initial consultation.

  • We will meet to discuss the employee position you are hiring for to learn the details we will need to cover in the employment contract
  • We will prepare a contract for you to present to your prospective employee
  • We will meet to review the contract with you and explain the clauses and the legal requirements they will place on you

Lisa helped advise me during a recent employment law dispute. It was time sensitive and she quickly navigated the various clauses in my contract, the legal precedent, and provides suggestions of how to proceed. She also took into account what I personally wanted out of a possible resolution, which I appreciated.

Couldn't be happier with the experience. I absolutely would go to her for council in future employment matters. I recommend her for any employee with an employment law issue.

Lisa was fantastic to deal with, and helped our organization with not only what we originally sought assistance with, but also with a few other items we weren't even aware of. She was very in tune with our needs, and a pleasure to do business with. Would recommend to others.
